Alberta’s writers come from around the world, speak a world of languages and publish everything from blogs to books. Yet writers who have made a name in other countries or in particular types of writing all too often hit brick walls when trying to break into new territory. Writing Across Borders will connect writers directly with publishers, editors, an agent, grantors and other mentors in settings that invite questions and provide tools for publishing across borders.
Hosted by the Get Publishing Communications Society, a collaborative of local writing groups, Writing Across Borders addresses the growing diversity in who we are and what we do as writers. No matter their chosen languages, mediums or genres, writers will find sage advice for publishing their work at Writing Across Borders, a Get Publishing event set for May 1-2 at MacEwan’s downtown campus.
- Keynote speakers Annari van der Merwe, who has nurtured new voices at Random House South Africa, and Thomas Trofimuk, whose third novel is garnering international notice.
- Learning sessions on query writing, translation, online publishing, multilingual markets, marketing, copyright, taxes and more.
- Instant feedback at Pitch Camp, Mentor Café, Critiquing Circle, Grants Q&A and OutRight Communications’ Marketing Your Book session.
- Marketplace, a time to connect with publishers, writing groups and others who support writers.
- Saturday celebration, a dinner with multicultural flair and entertainment by Anima Dissonante, Danielle Lowe, Sisters of Sahara and Capoeira.
