Registration for Get Publishing 2009: Writing Across Borders is now open! Conference details and on-line registration instructions are available at www.getpublishing.ca.

As with past events, Writing Across Borders will connect writers with publishers, editors, agents and fellow writers

In addition, this year's program will help writers spot new opportunities to publish across borders of language, geography, genre, medium and culture.

Highlights:

  • Join us for the Friday night wine and cheese reception, where local award-winning author and poet Thomas Trofimuk will share his recent cross-genre and cross-border success stories
  • At the Saturday morning keynote session, Annari van der Merwe, director of Random House South Africa's Umuzi Publishing, will offer insights of value to writers at any point in their career
  • Choose from nine professional development sessions, with topics as fascinating and diverse as The Multipreneurial Writer, Copyrights and Copy Wrongs, and Lost in Translation
  • Learn about hot topics and hot markets during the working lunch
  • Take part in the notoriously popular "pitch camp" where you'll spend 15 uninterrupted minutes with a publisher, editor, or agent
  • New this year! Meet with an experienced writer at the mentor's café and learn
  • Browse tables at the lively marketplace where our sponsors and other publishing and writing organizations will showcase their services

The conference takes place May 1 and 2, 2009, at the Robbins Health Learning Centre at the downtown campus of Grant MacEwan. Please join us.

Bring Dad to the historic farm in the heart of the park "where river valley trails began". Delicious food, drinks and music will be provided in the 1918 cabin, built with the last logs floated down river from Wabamun. Walk the gracious grounds, surrounded by horses, and make it a day for Dad to remember.

Proceeds benefit animals and students at Edmonton's own equine centre and restore facilities for community use.

Tickets: $20 per person

Sunday, June 20, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00pm

The Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association (WELCA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1999. Located on Captain Keillor's historic farm in Edmonton's river valley, east of Fort Edmonton Park, the Centre provides unique horse-related education programs, riding lessons, camps, demonstrations, community events and horse shows. Most people enjoy these benefits without ever owning a horse, including 95% of our students, 30% of whom have special needs. The farm in the park is open year round, providing respite, healthy recreation, therapy, sport and education. Its visitation rates exceed 50,000 annually.  Although owned by the City of Edmonton since the early 1970's, WELCA is responsible for maintenance, staffing and operating costs for this Community Services Partner Facility. All proceeds from their fundraising activities benefit students and school horses and help maintain the facilities for community use.

Alberta’s writers come from around the world, speak a world of languages and publish everything from blogs to books. Yet writers who have made a name in other countries or in particular types of writing all too often hit brick walls when trying to break into new territory. Writing Across Borders will connect writers directly with publishers, editors, an agent, grantors and other mentors in settings that invite questions and provide tools for publishing across borders.

Hosted by the Get Publishing Communications Society, a collaborative of local writing groups, Writing Across Borders addresses the growing diversity in who we are and what we do as writers. No matter their chosen languages, mediums or genres, writers will find sage advice for publishing their work at Writing Across Borders, a Get Publishing event set for May 1-2 at MacEwan’s downtown campus.

Get Publishing 2009 Highlights:
  • Keynote speakers Annari van der Merwe, who has nurtured new voices at Random House South Africa, and Thomas Trofimuk, whose third novel is garnering international notice.
  • Learning sessions on query writing, translation, online publishing, multilingual markets, marketing, copyright, taxes and more.
  • Instant feedback at Pitch Camp, Mentor Café, Critiquing Circle, Grants Q&A and OutRight Communications’ Marketing Your Book session.
  • Marketplace, a time to connect with publishers, writing groups and others who support writers.
  • Saturday celebration, a dinner with multicultural flair and entertainment by Anima Dissonante, Danielle Lowe, Sisters of Sahara and Capoeira.

For more info about the event program, available bursaries or how to sponsor a writer, go to www.getpublishing.ca.
