The Whitemud Equine Learning Centre Association (WELCA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1999. Located on Captain Keillor's historic farm in Edmonton's river valley, east of Fort Edmonton Park, the Centre provides unique horse-related education programs, riding lessons, camps, demonstrations, community events and horse shows. Most people enjoy these benefits without ever owning a horse, including 95% of our students, 30% of whom have special needs. The farm in the park is open year round, providing respite, healthy recreation, therapy, sport and education. Its visitation rates exceed 50,000 annually. Although owned by the City of Edmonton since the early 1970's, WELCA is responsible for maintenance, staffing and operating costs for this Community Services Partner Facility. All proceeds from their fundraising activities benefit students and school horses and help maintain the facilities for community use.
